Moonaya, born Awa Mounaya Yanni on October 10, 1983, is a Senegalese-Beninese hip hop artist, singer, and songwriter celebrated for her socially conscious lyrics, Pan-African identity, and boundary-crossing musical style. Raised in Cotonou, Benin, in a musically rich household, Moonaya was exposed early to diverse genres including ragtime, R&B, soul, and African rhythms. Although trained as a lawyer, her passion for music led her to Dakar, Senegal, where she immersed herself in the local hip hop scene.
Moonaya began her career in the early 2000s and gained prominence in 2006 as Benin’s representative in the West African hip hop collective AURA (United Artists for African Rap). Her debut album, A Fleur 2 Mo’ (2009), showcased her ability to blend hip hop with Afrobeat, soul, and contemporary African sounds. Over the years, she has evolved into a dynamic live performer, often performing with a full band to enrich her shows. Her later works include the singles Qui and Il est temps (2018) and the EP Petit Oiseau (2019), released under Sony Music Africa.
Moonaya has toured extensively across West Africa — including Benin, Senegal, Togo, Guinea-Conakry, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, and Morocco — and performed in Europe, particularly in France and Belgium. She has appeared at numerous festivals such as Hip Hop Awards, Banlieue Rythme, Afrikakeur, Fête de la Musique, and Waga Hip Hop. Collaborations include work with artists like Boudor and Biba, highlighting her versatility and wide-reaching influence.
A recognized voice in Francophone African hip hop, Moonaya has received several accolades, including a silver medal in the “Chanson” category at the VIII Jeux de la Francophonie in 2017, a finalist position for the Prix Découvertes RFI, and nominations for the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA). She was also honored by Senegal’s Ministry of Culture for her contributions as a female leader in the hip hop scene.
Moonaya’s music consistently explores themes of identity, African unity, social justice, and mental health. As both an artist and activist, she uses her platform to challenge social norms, empower youth, and advocate for Pan-African solidarity. Her fusion of conscious lyrics, diverse musical influences, and cross-cultural perspective makes her a distinctive and enduring figure in African hip hop, inspiring a new generation of artists committed to artistry with purpose.
