Monique Bingham is an American vocalist and songwriter whose soulful presence has shaped the global house music scene for more than two decades. Born and raised in New York City, she grew up in a home strongly influenced by her Jamaican heritage. Music, storytelling, and the rhythms of reggae were part of her daily life, helping to form the expressive foundation that later defined her artistry.
Her professional journey began unexpectedly in the mid-1990s when she was invited to an informal recording session at Francois Kevorkian’s renowned Axis Studios. During that session, she wrote and performed what would become her first track, catching the attention of producer Dana Vlcek. Soon after, she joined his acid-jazz collective, Abstract Truth, as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter. Their early singles, including “Get Another Plan” and the later classic “We Had a Thing,” introduced Bingham’s distinctive voice and lyrical sensitivity to international audiences.
As Abstract Truth gained momentum, Monique attracted collaborations with major figures in house music, including Kerri Chandler, Jellybean Benitez, and Karizma. Her ability to merge thoughtful songwriting with deep, soulful delivery made her a standout in the genre. In 2011, she launched her own label, Bigga Sounds, further establishing her independence as an artist.
Her connection with South Africa grew steadily, especially after her acclaimed collaborations with Ralf Gum and Black Coffee. Performances at major festivals, including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, cemented her reputation in the region. Today, Monique Bingham remains one of house music’s most respected voices, celebrated for her depth, authenticity, and enduring creative impact.
