Journey
Monique Steyn is a South African singer, pianist, and performer known for her work in Afrikaans pop music. Raised in Pretoria, she completed formal music training up to Grade 8 in singing and studied at the former Pretoria Technikon, building a solid foundation in performance and music theory.
Her early career developed through live theatre, where she spent about six years performing in Barnyard Theatre productions. This stage work helped shape her performance style and gave her experience across a wide range of productions. She also gained national attention as a contestant on the first season of Idols South Africa, reaching the Top 50 and introducing her to a broader audience.
Her breakthrough came in 2010 with her debut album “Ek Val Vir Jou.” The title track, a duet with Snotkop, became a major hit with strong radio support and wide public recognition. The accompanying music video also gained significant online attention. The success of the release earned her two Tempo Awards, including Best Dance Album and Best Music Video.
She followed this with “Pienk Champagne,” where she also contributed as a songwriter, further shaping her artistic identity. In 2017, she released “Mosaïek,” reflecting her continued development as a recording artist.
Alongside studio work, Monique Steyn remains active in live entertainment, performing at corporate events, cabaret productions, and bilingual stage shows. Her theatre background continues to influence her performance approach, and she also works as a session singer.
Her career reflects steady growth from theatre stages to award-winning recordings, establishing her as a consistent presence in South African Afrikaans pop music.
