Journey
Malibongwe Prince Gwala, professionally known as Mjolisi, is a South African Maskandi singer and songwriter born on 1 May 2000 in Emzumbe, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Growing up in a culturally rich Zulu community, he developed an early love for music and was inspired by the traditional sounds he heard at family gatherings and local events. His passion for music became more serious during his teenage years when he began singing and experimenting with guitar performances.
After completing his education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mjolisi committed himself fully to building a career in Maskandi — a genre rooted in Zulu folk music. He launched his professional journey with early recordings, but true recognition came later as he refined his style. In 2024, a series of hit singles such as Umkami Sengalile and My Dululu catapulted him into the spotlight, earning him millions of streams and widespread praise within South Africa’s music community.
Mjolisi’s music Melds traditional instrumentation with modern production, giving his songs both cultural depth and contemporary appeal. His lyrics often explore themes of love, life challenges, cultural pride, and emotional resilience, connecting with listeners across generations. In addition to his studio work, he has performed at major festivals and cultural events, helping revive interest in Maskandi music among younger audiences.
Off stage, Mjolisi is known for his grounded nature and strong ties to family and community, reflecting his belief that music should express real experiences and cultural identity.
