Miya, born Masaaki Yaguchi on July 26, 1979, is a central figure in the Japanese rock landscape. Growing up in a rural village in Ibaraki, he was immersed in music from birth as the son of two music teachers. While he initially studied classical piano, it was the 8-bit melodies of Dragon Quest soundtracks and the visual intensity of X Japan that ignited his passion for composition. In 1997, while still a high school student, he co-founded the band MUCC, choosing the name for its simplicity and memorable impact.
As MUCC’s leader and principal songwriter, Miya has guided the band through nearly three decades of constant evolution. His musical philosophy is rooted in versatility; he frequently pivots between aggressive metalcore, dance-rock, and folk-inspired ballads. Uniquely, Miya serves as the band’s primary producer and engineer, even hand-crafting his own high-end audio cables to achieve a specific sonic signature.
His creative output extends far beyond a single group. He is a guitarist for the supergroup Petit Brabancon, a sought-after producer for emerging artists, and an established DJ who blends deep house with rock elements. Despite his technical mastery, Miya prioritizes the "soul" of a song over virtuosity, famously refusing to write lyrics in languages he doesn't fully master to ensure every note and word carries genuine emotional weight. He remains a pillar of the alternative scene, bridging the gap between underground grit and mainstream success.
