Journey
Naomi Ngcobo, known professionally as Miona, is a Durban-based singer-songwriter who has become a fresh voice in South Africa’s Afro-pop and soul landscape. Raised in a household where music was a constant presence, she developed her vocal foundation early through church and school choirs. A pivotal moment in her development occurred in 2011 when her school choir secured a provincial victory, signaling her potential on a larger stage.
At fifteen, she began performing as a lead vocalist for a live band in Musgrave, Durban. This period was essential to her versatility, as she spent two years mastering a repertoire that spanned Indian, American, and South African genres. After a brief hiatus to finish her high school education, she returned to the industry with a focus on establishing her own artistic identity, eventually hosting events across KwaZulu-Natal to build a grassroots following.
Miona’s sound is characterized by a blend of Jazz, R&B, and traditional African textures, often collaborating with Maskandi-influenced artists to bridge the gap between heritage and modern pop. She gained widespread attention through her work with Inkabi Records and FS World Records, collaborating with prominent figures such as MusiholiQ, Mduduzi Ncube, and Siya Ntuli. Her debut album, Inganono, released in 2025 through Sony Music Entertainment Africa, showcases her ability to balance energetic performances with a "futuristic-inspired" visual aesthetic. Beyond her music, she is recognized for maintaining a grounded public image that emphasizes individuality and self-love.
