Min Shaw, born Wilhelmina Jacoba Viviers in Johannesburg, is one of South Africa’s most cherished and historically significant Afrikaans folk and gospel vocalists. Her career began unconventionally; after completing her schooling at Helpmekaar Girls' High School, she initially qualified and worked as a school teacher. However, her passion for performance led her to sing at local venues in the evenings. Her definitive breakthrough arrived in 1961 after winning a high-profile talent contest on LM Radio, which quickly launched her into professional show business.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Shaw became a massive multimedia cultural icon, celebrated for her sweet vocal delivery and magnetic screen presence. She starred in landmark Afrikaans musical films such as “Hoor My Lied,” and “Jy Is My Liefling,” with the latter's theme song becoming her ultimate signature recording. She also established a legendary country-folk musical partnership with singer Lance James, resulting in several highly successful collaborative albums. Following a profound spiritual turning point in 1975, Shaw transitioned exclusively to Christian gospel music.
