A voice deeply tied to the rise of Rhythmic Elements, McKenzie Mpho Matome built a career that stretched across dance music, theatre, songwriting, and live performance culture in South Africa. Born and raised in Pretoria, he came into national focus during the mid-2000s alongside Thapelo “Master T” Nkoana as one half of Rhythmic Elements, a duo that helped redefine the direction of kwaito and Afro-house during a period of rapid musical change.
Their music drew heavily from township influences, layered percussion, live instrumentation, and African musical traditions, giving the group a distinct identity inside South Africa’s commercial dance movement. Releases such as “Hello Mr.,” “2 By 2,” “Molai,” and “Spirit of a Warrior,” alongside albums like The Offering, Lesson 1, and Bandorondoro, turned Rhythmic Elements into a household name heard across radio stations, clubs, taxis, and festival stages.
Inside the duo, Matome became closely connected to songwriting, performance ideas, and the broader creative identity behind the group’s success. As their popularity expanded, industry tensions surrounding contracts, ownership, and finances slowly damaged the partnership. In 2011, Matome publicly confirmed the split from Master T, maintaining that many songs linked to Rhythmic Elements were strongly tied to his writing contributions.
Following the breakup, he continued performing while exploring other creative directions through collaborative projects and independent work. Another major chapter arrived through theatre, particularly his involvement in Marikana – The Musical, a production inspired by the Marikana tragedy. His performance earned critical praise and secured a Naledi Theatre Award in 2015, revealing his strength beyond commercial dance music.
After a deeply personal spiritual period away from mainstream attention, Matome eventually returned with a more reflective public image. Fan demand later helped reunite him with Master T under Movement Rhythmic Elements, leading to the project Reconciliation and later releases including “Keep on Walking” in 2023.
