Maurício Tizumba, born December 15, 1957, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, is a dynamic figure in Brazilian arts. A singer, composer, percussionist, actor, director, and educator, he has dedicated over five decades to honoring and revitalizing Afro-Brazilian culture, especially the traditions of Congado and Afro-Mineiro percussion.
He began performing in 1973 and later graduated from the Theatre Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He co-founded 'Cia. Burlantins' in 1996, a street theater group known for staging musicals in public spaces, blending music, drama, and social commentary. He also launched 'Tambor Mineiro,' a cultural and educational initiative that teaches Afro-Mineiro percussion and performs widely.
Tizumba has appeared in more than 28 plays, including 'Bituca,' 'Besouro Cordão-de-Ouro,' and 'Galanga Chico Rei,' many in collaboration with João das Neves and Paulo César Pinheiro. In 2010, he received the Zilka Salaberry Theater Award for his role in 'Os Saltimbancos.'
His musical catalog spans albums like 'África Gerais,' 'Mozambique,' and 'Terreiro Zen,' a 2021 collaborative project exploring ritual music in a meditative style. His performances blend sacred rhythms with theatricality, humor, and soul.
Tizumba has represented Brazilian culture internationally, performing in the USA, Canada, Europe, and festivals like Rock in Rio II and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Praised by Folha de S.Paulo and Globo Minas, he remains a joyful, commanding presence on stage.
