Masike Mohapi better known as Funky Masike was a transformative figure in South African music, celebrated as a virtuosic guitarist and the soulful voice of the legendary Afro-rock band Harari. Rising to fame in the 1970s, Mohapi played a pivotal role in evolving the band.
As a master of the "Soweto Soul" sound, his technical brilliance on the guitar earned him his iconic nickname. Following his tenure with Harari, Mohapi launched a successful solo career, notably releasing the 1982 anthem "Gomora,” he released others like “Back Forever ,” and “Hand to Mouth.” Throughout his life, he remained a symbol of musical excellence, breaking racial barriers as one of the first Black South African pop stars on national television.
Tragically, his life was cut short following a a recent illness and he died August 14, 2014 but his legacy as a "musician’s musician" continues to inspire generations of Afro-soul artists.
