Born in Los Angeles to politically exiled Malawian parents nationalist leader Henry Masauko Blasius Chipembere and Catherine Chipembere, he grew up with a dual perspective that profoundly shaped his artistry. Masauko achieved significant commercial and critical acclaim after relocating to South Africa in the late 1990s, where he formed the duo Blk Sonshine with Neo Muyanga. Their debut album was a landmark in the South African acoustic scene, yielding the chart-topping single "Building" and securing them spots on global stages alongside icons like Nelson Mandela and Stevie Wonder. His music is defined by its stylistic fluidity, effortlessly weaving jazz and folk with traditional Malawian elements like Vimbuza and Kwasakwasa.
