Marioo, born Omary Ally Mwanga in Temeke, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a singer-songwriter whose work spans bongoflava, amapiano, dancehall, kwaito, and afrobeats. Rooted in one of Dar es Salaam's most storied neighborhoods, financial hardship forced him to leave secondary school during Form One, after which he worked as a motor vehicle mechanic in his uncle's garage while pursuing his passion for songwriting. Long before recording under his own name, Marioo was already shaping the sound of Tanzania's music scene from behind the scenes, a foundation that later informed the depth and range of his solo output.
His path to the forefront of East African music began as a songwriter for artists including Mwasiti, Dogo Janja, Shilole, Gigy Money, and Ditto. That craft translated seamlessly into his own recordings. His transition from songwriter to solo performer was marked by the success of early singles such as "Dar Kugumu," "Raha," "Inatosha," "Asante," "Anyinya," and "Mama Amina," the latter helping introduce Amapiano influences into mainstream Bongo Flava.
His debut album, "The Kid You Know," released in 2022, announced him as a fully realized artist in his own right. The release earned him two major honors that year: Best Bongo Flava Song and Best Male Bongo Flava Artist. Building on that momentum, he assembled a collaborator list that reflects both regional credibility and global reach, working alongside Bien of Sauti Sol, Rayvanny, Tyla, Harmonize, Ali Kiba, King Promise, Patoranking, Jovial, and Abigail Chams.
His widely recognized releases also include "SNOKONOKO III" and "Nani?," and in 2025 he delivered "The Godson (Deluxe)," extending a catalog that consistently crosses genre lines without losing focus.
In 2026, he released his debut EP, "MMMCXII," under LVRN Records (Love Renaissance)/HGA and Sony Music Entertainment East Africa, a partnership that positions him firmly within both African and international markets.
Beyond recording and performing, Marioo operates as the founder and CEO of Bad-Nation Company Limited, a multimedia production firm that signals his intention to build influence across the creative industry. With a discography that continues to grow, label infrastructure behind him, and a proven track record as both a songwriter and recording artist, he remains one of the more deliberate and multifaceted figures working in contemporary East African music.
