Margot Luyt, born on 3 October 1947, was a South African performer whose career stretched across theatre, radio, television, and film. She studied drama at Stellenbosch University, where she developed the skills that shaped her professional life.
Her early work was on stage, where she appeared in productions that highlighted her strong presence and adaptability. In 1978, she joined Radio Sonder Grense, the Afrikaans division of the national broadcaster, and became a central figure in radio drama and cultural programming. Her voice became familiar to audiences through dramas, documentaries, and poetry readings, making her one of the most distinctive voices in Afrikaans broadcasting.
She later moved into television, where she acted in series such as Agter Elke Man, Amalia, Arende, Die Byl, and Sara se Geheim. She also appeared in films including Die Spook van Donkergat and Uitvlucht. Alongside acting, she worked to preserve Afrikaans oral traditions, recording storytelling albums such as Ouma se Slaaptydstories, which introduced bedtime tales to new generations.
In her later years, she lived with Parkinson’s disease and passed away on 19 January 2021 at the age of 73. Margot Luyt is remembered as a performer who gave voice to Afrikaans culture, leaving behind a legacy of stories and broadcasts that continue to resonate.
