Mandisa Nomzamo Dlanga stands as an iconic, foundational figure in South African music history, celebrated for her immaculate vocal arrangements and prolific contribution as a premium backing artist. Born in Lusikisiki within the Eastern Cape, Dlanga migrated to the bustling cultural hub of Johannesburg to chase her creative aspirations. She entered the industry through the ranks of the legendary playwright and director Gibson Kente, whose intensive training sharpened her performance abilities. By the dawn of the 1980s, she tasted mainstream commercial success as a central member of the celebrated afro-pop musical group Jaws.
As the decade progressed, Dlanga evolved into an indispensable asset within South African recording studios. Her versatile, rich harmonies laid the foundational backdrop for generation-defining tracks by iconic local figures, including Chicco Twala, Stimela, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and Brenda Fassie. Her towering musical stature eventually echoed internationally, leading to high-profile studio and stage alignments with global music giants like Simply Red, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Paul Simon.
Her most enduring artistic alliance, however, began in 1986 when she joined forces with the legendary crossover musician Johnny Clegg. As the longest-tenured backing vocalist for his band, Savuka, she spent over three decades touring the world and breathing life into historic anti-apartheid anthems like "Asimbonanga". Decades after collecting a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award for her collaborative work, Dlanga officially claimed the center stage on her own terms, celebrating her 70th birthday with the release of her debut solo studio album, “Siyakha.”
