Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo was a South African musician, record producer, and cultural figure best known as a founding member of the kwaito group 'Big Nuz'. Born and raised in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, he grew up in a township environment where street performance, dance culture, and local sound systems heavily influenced his early interest in music.
He formed Big Nuz in 2002 alongside his childhood collaborators R Mashesha and Danger. The group spent its early years moving between studios in Johannesburg, working on demos and small collaborations before eventually signing with Gallo Records. Their debut album, "Zozo" in 2006, had limited impact, but their career shifted after linking up with DJ Tira’s Afrotainment label.
Their 2008 release "2nd Round Knockout" became a breakthrough project, giving the group national recognition and establishing them as major voices in South African kwaito. Mampintsha’s contribution was defined by his distinctive vocal style, club-driven hooks, and an instinct for catchy, street-rooted songwriting that connected strongly with dance audiences.
He remained central to Big Nuz through later successful projects such as "Undisputed," "Pound for Pound," and "Made in Africa," while also building his own imprint, West Ink Records, which helped promote emerging Gqom talent and extended his influence beyond the group.
Outside Big Nuz, he became a visible figure in South African pop culture through collaborations, solo work, and media attention, helping bridge kwaito’s legacy with the rise of Durban’s modern electronic sound. He died in 2022 after suffering a stroke, leaving behind a legacy tied to the evolution of kwaito and Gqom music.
