Journey
Melusi Mahlaba, known professionally as Malemon, is a South African recording artist and songwriter who has become a central figure in the evolution of the Amapiano and Gqom genres. Mahlaba, who hails from the historic township of Orlando West in Soweto, has a musical identity deeply rooted in the vibrant street culture and sonic heritage of his upbringing.
Mahlaba’s mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2020 with the single "Lemonade," a track that showcased his unique vocal delivery and instinct for hit-making. This success paved the way for a series of strategic collaborations with some of South Africa’s most influential producers and DJs, including DBN Gogo, Semi Tee, and MDU aka TRP. These partnerships have yielded dancefloor anthems such as "Kusho Bani" and "Coke Water," earning him a reputation for melodic precision and high-energy performances.
Beyond his vocal contributions, Mahlaba is an entrepreneur managing his career through his independent label, “Malemon Entertainment Rec.” His discography reflects a prolific work ethic and a commitment to sonic experimentation. Key milestones include the critically acclaimed album “Mshengu (2024),” and the culturally resonant “State Capture Case Closed! (2025).” Most recently, his 2026 live-recorded project with Mr. Nation Thingz, titled “2 Men Job,” an Ep that demonstrates his ability to bridge the gap between studio production and the raw energy of live South African dance music.
As a representative of the "New School" of Amapiano, Malemon continues to push the boundaries of the genre while maintaining the authentic township soul that first garnered him a dedicated following.
