Journey
Malachi, born Tanaka Shereni on 3 March 2000 in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a Zimbabwe-born South African R&B and trap-soul artist based in Johannesburg. He developed an interest in music early in life, teaching himself to sing and play guitar as a child. At around eleven years old he moved to South Africa, where he later began building his professional music career. His sound blends emotional R&B vocals with elements of trap, pop, and contemporary Afro-R&B, often centred on themes of love, vulnerability, relationships, and personal reflection. His style has been described as modern and atmospheric, drawing inspiration from global R&B trends while maintaining a distinctly African identity.
He gained wider attention in 2020 with the release of his debut EP Wicked Romance, a project that explored romantic and emotional experiences through melodic, introspective songwriting. The single “We Move” introduced him to a broader audience and helped establish his presence in the South African music space. He followed this with Wicked Romance Vol. 2, which expanded on the original themes and included collaborative work, including a remix of “We Move” featuring well-known South African artists.
Over time, Malachi has worked with various producers and musicians, contributing to both R&B-focused and more crossover projects within hip-hop and Afro-pop. His collaborations and features have allowed him to experiment with different sounds while maintaining his core artistic identity. His growing discography reflects both emotional openness and creative ambition, resonating strongly with younger listeners drawn to honest, expressive songwriting.
In recent years he has continued to release new music and build his audience through digital platforms and live performance, steadily establishing himself as one of the emerging voices in Southern Africa’s contemporary R&B and trap-soul scene.
