Journey
Mpumi ZamaNtungwa Khumalo, known as Makhumalo, is a South African DJ, vocalist, and entertainer from KaNyamazane Township in Mpumalanga. Her passion for music began during her high school years at Thembeka Secondary School, where she sang as an alto in the school choir. Growing up in a musical environment helped shape her love for performance and laid the foundation for her future career in entertainment.
After completing high school, Makhumalo continued exploring her musical abilities and participated in the first season of Clash of the Choirs, where her team finished in second place under the mentorship of renowned choir master Zwai Bala. During this period, she also auditioned for Idols South Africa and the internationally acclaimed stage production The Lion King, while working as a backing vocalist for several local artists.
In 2001, she expanded her career into broadcasting when she worked as a news reporter at Kasi FM, a community radio station. Her journey later evolved when she transitioned from being a vocalist to becoming a disc jockey, a move that allowed her to fully express her creativity and passion for music.
Over the years, Makhumalo has performed at numerous events across Nelspruit and surrounding townships. In 2005, she was part of major local events including the Metro FM Love Movement and One Night with Phumla Music Shows. Her growing reputation also led to opportunities to share stages with prominent entertainers.
In 2021, she performed as a female DJ at comedian Celeste Ntuli’s “Money & Men” comedy show held at Emnotweni Arena in Nelspruit, opening the event with an energetic set. Her dedication and talent continued to open doors, and in 2024 she became a resident DJ at Black Queen Lifestyle, a popular entertainment venue in her hometown.
That same year she released her single “Thandiwe,” which quickly gained attention and is available on major digital streaming platforms including Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music.
As her career continues to grow, Makhumalo remains passionate about music and performance. She takes pride in seeing more women take center stage in the DJ industry and enjoys creating joyful moments for audiences through her performances. Today, she performs at clubs, private parties, weddings, and special events, steadily building her presence in the South African music scene.
