Tumelo Nedondwe, who goes by the stage name Maero, is a South African DJ and music producer recognized as one half of the influential Amapiano duo MFR Souls. Emerging from Katlehong, he is regarded among the producers who helped shape the modern sound of Amapiano.
Raised in Katlehong, Maero developed a passion for music early in life. Surrounded by township dance culture and local house sounds, he began experimenting with DJing and production while still young. His early musical interests were rooted in Deep House and soulful house, influences that later informed the melodic, piano-driven character heard in his productions.
His career took shape when he partnered with fellow producer Tumelo Mabe, forming MFR Souls. Through club performances and independent releases across Johannesburg and the broader Gauteng scene, the duo steadily built recognition within South Africa’s evolving dance-music landscape.
Their breakthrough arrived with "Amanikiniki," a widely celebrated track that became synonymous with the early mainstream rise of Amapiano.
His contributions to the genre have also received industry recognition. Through collaborative work with leading producers including DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, Maero was part of the team behind Scorpion Kings EP, which won Best Produced Album at the South African Music Awards. With MFR Souls, he has also earned nominations at the SAMAs, including recognition for their project Musical Kings in categories such as Best Amapiano Album and Duo/Group of the Year.
Alongside his work with MFR Souls, Maero continues to perform as a DJ and collaborate with artists across South Africa’s music industry. As Amapiano expands globally, his work remains part of the creative foundation that helped define the genre’s sound and international momentum.
