Ezee Hanabe, stage name Ma-E, is a South African rapper, songwriter, and entrepreneur best known as a member of the influential hip hop group Teargas. He emerged from the Soweto hip hop scene, where he developed a style rooted in Skhanda rap, blending gritty township storytelling with kwaito-influenced rhythm and street vernacular.
He rose to prominence in the early 2000s as part of Teargas alongside K.O and Ntukza. The group became one of the most important acts in South African hip hop, releasing a series of successful albums including "K’shubile K’bovu" (2006), "Wafa Wafa" (2008), "Dark or Blue" (2009), and "Num8er Num8e"* (2012). Their music helped shape the sound of modern South African rap by merging hip hop with local cultural identity and commercial appeal.
After Teargas, Ma-E transitioned into a solo career, releasing his debut album "Township Counsellor" in 2016, which reflected his role as a voice for everyday street experiences. The release highlighted his lyrical focus on motivation, township realities, and personal growth.
He also expanded into entrepreneurship, co-founding the entertainment company 'Cashtime Life,' which played a key role in developing artists like K.O and Maggz while strengthening the business side of South African hip hop.
Ma-E continues to be recognized as a veteran figure in South African rap, respected for his contribution to the mainstream success and cultural identity of Skhanda-influenced hip hop.
