Journey
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), Mxolisi Lokwe, professionally known as MXO, grew up immersed in the sounds of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Music was never just a pastime; it was part of who he was. Around 1999, he moved to Johannesburg, chasing a dream and performing in clubs across Yeoville, Hillbrow, Berea, and Melville, where his presence quickly began turning heads.
His breakthrough arrived with the single “Sista Kunjani,” a daring mix of soul, jazz, funk, traditional rhythms, and pop. The song captured attention because it dared to defy norms, fusing genres while staying rooted in Xhosa expression. In 2004, MXO released his debut album, *Peace of Mind*, featuring tracks like “Zand’iyibone,” “Delilah,” and “Tonight.” The album brought alternative soul and jazz‑inflected R&B into mainstream consciousness, proving that Xhosa lyrics and experimental instrumentation could hold their own on any stage.
MXO has always carved his own path. By keeping the rights to his music and launching his own label, he resisted commercial pressure and maintained creative control. On stage, he’s known for his raspy voice, unique style, and natural ability to connect, building a loyal following across South Africa and abroad. Sharing stages with legends and touring internationally, MXO earned respect not by trends, but through honesty and craft.
Today, he continues to evolve, recently launching Different Folks, a creative platform supporting artists and sustainable artistry, showing that MXO’s vision extends beyond music, shaping a space where creativity thrives on its own terms.
