Born Mbwana Mohamed in Dar es Salaam, MB Dog, also known as MB Dogg or MBDOGGMASTER, came from Manzese with a sound that softened early Bongo Flava’s hard edges. Raised on American R&B and hip hop, he ultimately drew his compass from Tanzanian trailblazers like Dola Soul, Mr. II, and Kwanza Unit, shaping a melodic, emotionally driven style delivered in Swahili.
He rose as a key member of "Tip Top Connection," alongside Madee and Z Anto, and is credited with pioneering the "Lavdav" style in 1999. His mainstream breakthrough came with “Latifa” (2004/2005), followed by “Si Uliniambia,” which anchored his debut album of the same title. The project became one of Tanzania’s top-selling albums between 2005 and 2006. Other notable songs include “Mapenzi Kitu Gani” and “Ina Maana.”
At his peak, MB Dog was among Tanzania’s most awarded artists, winning multiple Kilimanjaro Music Awards, including Best Upcoming Artist, Best Album, Best R&B/Bongo Flava Artist, and Best Male Artist of the Year. His work helped steer Bongo Flava toward a more soulful, vocal-led direction.
After a late-2000s hiatus spent partly in Europe, he returned with renewed focus. Today, he remains active as a songwriter, composer, occasional actor, and independent digital creator.
