MJ “The Man” Hlungwane was a celebrated South African Tsonga musician from Dumela Village in Malamulele, Limpopo. Born in the late 1940s, he rose to prominence in the early 1980s as one of the leading voices in traditional Xitsonga music. His career began in 1983 when he formed the group MJ Hlungwani & The Vultures, gaining national recognition for their authentic folk sound and meaningful storytelling. Deeply rooted in Tsonga culture, his music blended melodic rhythms, spiritual messages, and reflections on everyday life, unity, and morality.
Over the course of his career, Hlungwani released more than 20 albums, with notable works such as Otshamela a Roniba, Davulela Hembe (2002), Xipapilani (2014), and Vuyani Malume (2021). His distinctive voice, lyrical depth, and cultural authenticity earned him a loyal following across South Africa and beyond. He was affectionately known as “The Man” for his commanding stage presence and dedication to preserving Tsonga heritage.
Hlungwane’s influence extended beyond music he mentored younger artists and was honored with a Living Legend Award by the SABC for his lifelong contribution to traditional music. He was also a devoted family man, survived by three wives and twelve children, whom he encouraged to pursue education and discipline.
MJ Hlungwane passed away on 25 January 2021 at the age of 72 after a brief illness. He was laid to rest in his hometown, remembered as a cultural icon whose music continues to celebrate the pride and spirit of Tsonga identity.
