Lanshinge “Lulu” Dikana was born on 18 December 1978 in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, into a family where music was part of everyday life. Her father, Vuyisile Dikana, was a drummer, and her sister, Zonke, would also become a celebrated musician. Lulu’s love for singing began in her church choir, where her natural talent for blending soul, R&B, and gospel first emerged.
Although she initially pursued a law degree at the University of Fort Hare, her heart remained in music. She released her first album, "My Diary," "My Thoughts" (2008), which introduced her music style. Her second album, "This Is the Life" (2011), brought her widespread recognition and nominations for Best Female Album, Best Produced Album, and Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the Metro FM Music Awards, as well as Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). Her final album, "I Came to Love" (2014), was also critically acclaimed, earning nominations at the Metro FM Awards and SAMAs, including Female Artist of the Year and Producer of the Year alongside Powella Tiemo.
Lulu collaborated with notable South African artists such as Zonke Dikana, Rebecca Malope, and Joyous Celebration, leaving her mark through both recordings and live performances. Her songs explored love, hope, and resilience, delivered with warmth, honesty, and heartfelt emotion. Even while facing serious health challenges, she continued performing, sharing her gift with fans across the country.
Tragically, Lulu passed away on 3 December 2014, leaving behind her young son, Luhle. Her music, however, continues to resonate, celebrated for its soulful depth, inspiring lyrics, and the unmistakable warmth of her voice.
