Lucibela Freitas Dos Santos, performing under the mononym Lucibela, is a luminous Cape Verdean vocalist who has emerged as a primary guardian of her country’s musical soul. Born on April 18, 1986, in the town of Tarrafal on the island of São Nicolau, the rhythmic trade winds of the archipelago shaped her life. Her formal introduction to music began in Mindelo, where she joined the female vocal group Mindel Som, but personal tragedy soon tested her path. Following the death of her mother, Lucibela relocated to the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, where she spent years honing her craft, singing in tourist hotels to support her family.
She move to the capital, Praia, in 2012 proved pivotal. There, she became a fixture of the local "noites de serenata," earning the nickname "The Voice of Gold" for her velvety tone and effortless range. Her global breakthrough arrived at the 2017 Atlantic Music Expo, an industry showcase that instantly captivated international scouts. This led to a recording contract with Lusafrica, the label famous for launching Cesária Évora.
Lucibela’s discography, including “Laço Umbilical,” (2018), “Amdjer,” (2022), and her latest tribute to heritage, “Moda Antiga,”(2024) highlights her mastery of morna and coladera. She sings primarily in Cape Verdean Creole, articulating themes of love, "sodade" (longing), and the resilience of the Cape Verdean woman. By bridging the gap between the golden age of island music and the contemporary world stage, she has performed at prestigious venues like the Udaipur World Music Festival and WOMEX, solidifying her status as a vital cultural ambassador for Africa.
