A South African soprano gospel singer associated with Joyous Celebration, Thembelihle Mbanjwa Sowazi, fondly known as Lihle Mbanjwa, was part of a generation of performers who developed within large ensemble gospel structures. Her contributions are mainly preserved through live recordings and televised worship performances from the late 2000s into the early 2010s.
She served as a soprano voice within Joyous Celebration, participating in both featured sections and harmonic arrangements during the group’s large-scale live recordings and arena worship events. Before joining the collective, she had experience as a backing vocalist for artists including Unathi and Swazi Dlamini, which helped shape her stage background.
One of her most referenced appearances is on “Joyous Celebration 15,” where she performed “Ulithemba Lami,” a performance often linked to her name within the group’s catalogue.
She passed away in November 2014 following a road accident while returning from a performance. Her death was widely mourned within the gospel community, with tributes reflecting on her role in Joyous Celebration and her contribution to its live worship recordings.
