Leon Lee, whose real name is Aaron Mawasha, is a South African singer and songwriter associated with the contemporary dance and amapiano scene. Born in Seshego, Limpopo, and raised in Soshanguve, Pretoria, he developed his musical identity through a combination of vocal performance, songwriting, and collaborations with artists and producers from South Africa’s expanding dance-music community.
Lee began gaining professional experience in 2014, when he became the lead vocalist of Jika Boys. The experience provided an early platform for him to develop his performance style and work within South Africa’s vibrant dance-music culture. He later collaborated with various producers and performers.
His major breakthrough came in 2020 through “Mang' Dakiwe,” his collaboration with DJ Obza. The song became widely recognized within the South African dance scene and significantly increased Lee’s profile. A later remix involving DJ Obza, Bongo Beats, Makhadzi, Mr Brown, and Leon Lee extended the song’s reach.
Following that success, Lee released the six-track “Dr Lee” EP in 2021, featuring collaborations with artists including Cue London and Prince Benza. His next major project was the seven-track “Ke Nna Mang” album, released in December 2022. The project included songs such as “Love u better,” “Controller,” “Laphakuwe,” “Selinah,” and “Ke Ngwana Mama.”
In 2025, Lee continued his recording career with the five-track “Khethile” EP, featuring collaborations with Anuza SA, Nayvee, Trademark, FRIIGO HITS, and Majour A.
Through his releases and collaborations, Leon Lee has established himself as a recognizable vocalist within South Africa’s evolving dance and amapiano industry.
