Journey
Leila Kayondo is a celebrated Ugandan Afro-pop singer, songwriter, and business entrepreneur who has left an indelible mark on East Africa's contemporary music scene. Born on January 1, 1988, in Uganda, Kayondo’s creative roots took hold during her childhood while performing in school choirs and competitive music festivals. While prioritizing her education eventually graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work from Uganda Christian University in 2011 she simultaneously pursued a professional career in entertainment.
Her mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2007 as a core member of the all-female music collective Dream Gals. The group enjoyed massive success across East Africa, dominating radio airwaves with hit songs like "Weekend" and "Wandekangawo." Driven by a desire for individual expression, Kayondo departed the group in 2009 to forge a solo path. She quickly solidified her position as a solo powerhouse with chart-topping tracks like "Kiruma," "Relaxing," and "Awo."
Throughout her career, she has collaborated with prominent industry heavyweights like Jose Chameleone, GNL Zamba, and Sheebah. In 2017, her pan-African appeal widened after she partnered with Nigeria’s Striker Entertainment label, releasing well-received tracks like "Musaayi." Beyond her musical triumphs, Kayondo is a prominent figure in Kampala's fashion industry, successfully operating her own clothing boutique, which seamlessly bridges her dual passions for music and style
