Abdu Hamid Said, better known as Kontawa, is a Tanzanian recording artist whose work spans rap, singing, songwriting, acting, modeling, and brand partnerships. Emerging from Dar es Salaam's competitive music culture, he has earned music recognition that reflects determination, personal ambition, and the realities of everyday life, while drawing on Bongo Flava, hip-hop, and Singeli traditions.
Growing up in a modest household, Kontawa faced financial challenges that cut his formal education short. Rather than allowing those circumstances to define his future, he supported himself through small-scale trading, selling second-hand clothing and working in product distribution around Dar es Salaam. Those years exposed him to the experiences that would later influence his songwriting, giving his music a grounded perspective shaped by resilience and persistence.
Before becoming Kontawa, he performed under the name A.B.A (Amazing Boy from Africa). As his confidence and artistic direction evolved, he adopted the stage name Kontawa, establishing a fresh identity that coincided with the release of his debut single, "Sura Ya Baba," in 2019. The record marked his official entry into Tanzania's commercial music industry and introduced audiences to an artist with an unmistakable voice and direct lyrical style.
His national breakthrough arrived with "Champion," a motivational anthem inspired by his own journey from hardship to opportunity. The song resonated widely across Tanzania, leading to successful collaborations with artists including Nay Wa Mitego and Harmonize, while positioning Kontawa among the country's emerging rap talents. He continued that momentum with releases such as "Moyo," "Dunga Mawe," "Mwalimu," "Daktari," "Binadamu," "Tangazo," "Sikuachi" featuring Maua Sama, and "Chegu" alongside Billnass.
Outside music, Kontawa has broadened his creative portfolio through acting and modeling, including an appearance in the 2024 film 'Dhahabu.' His growing influence has also been acknowledged by the Tanzania Music Awards, where he received the Best Upcoming Artist honor and later earned a nomination in the Best Rapper category. He continues to expand his presence across East Africa, building a career founded on authenticity, consistency, and an enduring connection with his audience.
