Khanyisile Siphiwe Ngutshane, stage name Khanya Greens, is a South African singer, actress, songwriter, and performer known for her work in Afro-soul and Amapiano music. Raised in a politically conscious and culturally rich household, she is the daughter of anti-apartheid struggle stalwarts Professor Enos Ngutshane and Dr. Ann Ngutshane. Her upbringing exposed her to diverse music, theatre, and global artistic influences from an early age.
Her interest in performance developed during childhood through school concerts and drama studies. While attending high school, she worked as an extra on television productions, including 'Rhythm City.' She later moved to Cape Town to study Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 2013.
Khanya first gained mainstream recognition as an actress after appearing on the South African telenovela 'Uzalo' in 2015, where she played Nkuleh Dlamini. She later appeared in productions such as 'Isidingo: The Need,' 'Generations: The Legacy,' 'Isithembiso,' 'The Queen,' and 'Gomora,' establishing herself as a versatile television performer.
Her breakthrough in music came after being discovered by kwaito pioneer Arthur Mafokate, who signed her to his 999 Music label. In 2018, she released her debut Afro-soul album, "Be Still and Know," a release rooted in emotional storytelling, spirituality, and soulful vocal arrangements. Critics and listeners frequently compared her vocal tone to artists like Lira because of her smooth delivery and melodic control.
As Amapiano grew into South Africa’s dominant sound, Khanya transitioned into the genre while maintaining her soulful identity. She gained wider music recognition through collaborations with artists and producers, including MFR Souls, Major League DJz, Abidoza, De Mthuda, Ntokzin, Bongza, Moscow on Keys, and Villosoul. Songs such as "Indlela," "My Baby," "Wawela," and "Your Love" helped establish her as one of the notable female vocalists within the Amapiano movement.
In 2021, she released the album "Piano Journey," a 14-track project blending soulful songwriting with Amapiano production. She later followed with "Infinity" in 2022 and singles including "La Música" with Villosoul, continuing to expand her presence within contemporary South African dance music.
