Journey
Kent Smoke, born Kenton Lee Windvogel in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a South African singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer, and live performer recognized for his eclectic fusion of R&B, jazz, soul, pop, and South African house influences. Raised along the Durban coastline, he briefly studied music at Natal Technikon before relocating to Johannesburg, where he steadily established himself within the country’s contemporary music circuit. Over the years, he collaborated with several notable South African acts, including Lira, Sasha-Lee Davids, Lloyd Cele, and the band Dawnay, eventually becoming a long-serving guitarist in Lira’s acclaimed touring ensemble, The Love Band.
Before launching his solo career, Kent Smoke was part of the R&B groups Soulstone and Urban Reign. Soulstone gained mainstream attention through the chart-performing single “Now That Your Love Has Gone.” At the same time, Urban Reign earned a nomination for Best Urban Pop Album at the South African Music Awards and won the Channel O Music Video Award for Most Gifted R&B Video in 2010 for “Addicted.”
As a solo artist, Kent Smoke developed a sound rooted in emotionally driven songwriting, melodic guitar work, and polished crossover production. His influences range from Jonathan Butler and John Mayer to classic soul groups like The Temptations, shaping a style that balances contemporary urban music with organic instrumentation. Media coverage around his early solo releases highlighted his collaborations with vocalist Yves, particularly on the bilingual love song “Follow,” which blended English and Xhosa lyrical elements.
Beyond recording, Kent Smoke has built a reputation as a versatile live musician and session guitarist, contributing to touring productions, television appearances, and live concert DVDs, including Lira’s celebrated releases “Captured Tour” and “First Decade.” His career reflects a steady evolution from ensemble musician to a respected solo artist in South Africa’s modern urban and adult contemporary music.
