Kekeletso "Keke" Phoofolo is a towering figure in South African gospel, celebrated for his electrifying energy and soul-stirring vocals. Born in 1980 in Pimville, Soweto, his journey began in 1994 as a backing vocalist for Zoe Gospel Music. A natural performer, he gained early individual recognition as a soloist in the 1997 Shell Road to Fame competition. Before fully committing to his spiritual calling, Keke briefly experimented with the Kwaito genre in 1998 as part of the group Kom-Kom, a move that contributed to his unique, rhythmically driven contemporary style.
Keke’s path to solo stardom was paved by high-profile mentorships and collaborations. In 1999, he toured with the legendary Benjamin Dube, and by the early 2000s, he achieved national prominence as a lead singer for the powerhouse collective Joyous Celebration. His rendition of the hymn "Jo Ke Mohlolohlolo" became a fan favorite, showcasing his ability to lead massive choral arrangements with intimacy and power.
He officially launched his solo career in 2005 with the debut album “Restoration.” This project was a massive success, but it was his subsequent live recordings that cemented his legacy. The DVD “Revival,” (2006) and the platinum-selling “Living Testimony,” (2007) earned him critical acclaim and a South African Music Award (SAMA). Known for hits like "O Mohau" and "Ke Leataba," Keke has released over eight albums, consistently blending urban R&B with traditional Sotho worship. Today, he continues his ministry through his label, GraceKeke Music, and his recent Resurgence project.
