Journey
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Karungari Mungai, professionally known as Karun, is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, producer, and one of the leading voices in East Africa's alternative R&B scene. Growing up in a family that encouraged creativity, she developed an interest in music from an early age, drawing inspiration from artists such as Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Amel Larrieux, and André 3000. She began writing songs while still in school and later attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the United States, where she refined her skills in songwriting, music production, and performance. Karun primarily records in English, occasionally incorporating Swahili into her music.
Her professional career began as a member of the Nairobi-based alternative hip-hop group Camp Mulla, alongside Taio Tripper, Shappaman, Kus Ma, and Neomi Ng'ang'a. The group quickly attracted international attention with its fresh approach to Kenyan urban music, earning a nomination for Best International Act: Africa at the 2012 BET Awards. Camp Mulla's success introduced Karun to audiences beyond East Africa and laid the foundation for her solo career.
Following the group's hiatus, Karun focused on her studies before returning to music as a solo artist. In 2019, she reintroduced herself with "Glow Up," released through Mr Eazi's emPawa Africa initiative. The single marked the beginning of a new chapter characterized by introspective songwriting and contemporary R&B production. She continued building her catalog with releases including "Here With Me," "Only You (A COLORS SHOW)," "Catch A Vibe," "Lie to Me," "Bina," and "Take It Slow." Her projects, including the EPs Catch A Vibe and Ruthless, further established her identity as an independent artist with a distinctive creative direction.
Throughout her career, Karun has collaborated with artists including Taio, Maya Amolo, Camp Mulla, and members of Kenya's growing alternative music community. Her appearance on A COLORS SHOW introduced her music to a global audience, while her work as both a producer and songwriter has expanded her influence beyond performing.
Karun continues to release music independently while balancing songwriting, production, and live performances. With an internationally informed perspective, a growing catalog, and a commitment to artistic authenticity, she has become one of Kenya's most respected contemporary musicians and a key figure in the evolution of African alternative R&B.
