Journey
Kamo Mphela, born Kamogelo Matona, is a South African dancer, singer, and performer from Emdeni, Soweto, widely regarded as one of the most influential female figures in the global rise of amapiano culture. Known as the “Queen of Amapiano,” she has built a career defined by energetic performance, viral choreography, and a seamless blend of dance and music artistry.
Her passion for performance began in childhood while accompanying her father, who worked in the South African radio and events space at YFM, where she was exposed early to live audiences and stage environments. These experiences shaped her confidence as a performer. She later explored acting, appearing as an extra on the television drama 'Isibaya,' before fully committing to dance and music as her career path.
Kamo Mphela rose to prominence through social media, where her dance videos quickly went viral and positioned her as a standout figure in South Africa’s emerging amapiano movement. Her dynamic style draws from pantsula, kwaito, gqom, and amapiano dance culture, allowing her to bridge multiple South African street and club traditions into a distinct performance identity.
Her transition into music began through features on major amapiano records, including "Amanikiniki" with MFR Souls and "Sbwl" with Busiswa, which established her presence as both a dancer and recording artist. She later signed with Major League Music and released her debut EP "Twentee" in 2019, marking her official entry into the music industry as a lead artist.
Kamo Mphela’s rise continued with a series of successful releases and collaborations, including "Nkulunkulu," "Elon Musk," "Suka Emabhozeni," and "Woza La," as well as the globally successful 2023 hit "Dalie" with Tyler ICU and Khalil Harrison. The song achieved major commercial milestones, topping charts across multiple countries and gaining viral traction on digital platforms.
Her artistry is strongly defined by performance-driven music, where choreography, visuals, and stage presence are as central as the sound itself. This approach has made her one of the most recognisable live performers in amapiano and a key contributor to its global visibility.
Kamo Mphela has received multiple industry nominations and awards, including recognition at the Basadi in Music Awards, Metro FM Music Awards, Trace Awards, and African Entertainment Awards USA, highlighting her influence across both music and performance categories.
