Kamal Haasan is an Indian actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, playback singer, lyricist, choreographer, and politician whose career has shaped Indian cinema for more than six decades. Born in 1954 in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, he entered cinema as a child artist with “Kalathur Kannamma” in 1960. His performance earned him the President’s Gold Medal, marking the beginning of an extraordinary career.
Haasan rose to prominence in the 1970s through collaborations with filmmakers including K. Balachander, appearing in films such as “Apoorva Raagangal” and “16 Vayathinile.” His willingness to experiment with characters, physical transformations, narrative structure, and filmmaking techniques quickly distinguished him from his contemporaries. His celebrated performances in “Moondram Pirai,” “Nayakan,” “Pushpak,” “Sagara Sangamam,” “Swathi Muthyam,” “Apoorva Sagodharargal,” “Thevar Magan,” and “Indian” demonstrated his versatility across drama, romance, comedy, action, and socially conscious cinema.
“Nayakan,” directed by Mani Ratnam in 1987, became one of the defining films of his career and remains a landmark of Indian cinema. Decades later, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan renewed their collaboration with “Thug Life,” released in 2025. Haasan co-wrote the film with Mani Ratnam and also served as a producer, while A.R. Rahman composed the music. The film reunited the two filmmakers 38 years after “Nayakan” and starred Haasan alongside Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and others.
Haasan has repeatedly expanded his role in acting. Through Raaj Kamal Films International, he has produced important films and participated in writing, choreography, music, technical design, and other aspects of production. His film “Dasavathaaram” became particularly notable for his portrayal of ten different characters, demonstrating his continuing interest in transformation and technical experimentation.
His achievements include three National Film Awards, numerous Filmfare Awards, and major state-level honors. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1990 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014. His performances in “Moondram Pirai,” “Nayakan,” and “Indian” earned National Film Award recognition, while “Thevar Magan” also received national recognition for production.
Beyond cinema, Haasan has contributed as a playback singer and lyricist and has maintained a strong interest in technological innovation within filmmaking. His influence extends across generations because he has consistently treated cinema as a multidisciplinary art rather than simply an acting profession.
Kamal Haasan remains active in Indian cinema and public life. “Thug Life” represents his continuing collaboration with major filmmakers and younger performers, while his six-decade body of work continues to influence actors, directors, writers, and technicians across Indian cinema.
