Joanna Field remains one of South Africa’s most cherished musical exports, celebrated for a career that seamlessly blended country roots with popular appeal. Born in Boksburg as Joan Elizabeth Lubbe, she spent her early years balancing work as a receptionist with late-night performances in local country bands. Her legendary "big break" occurred when her singing was overheard by a neighbor, leading to an audition with producer Peter Lotis at Gallo Records.
Her professional debut in 1973, "Goodbye John I Love You," quickly established her as a rising star, garnering her the Mini-SARIE for Most Promising Female Vocalist. However, it was the 1977 release of "Silwermaan" that cemented her status as a household name. The song became a cultural phenomenon, topping the Afrikaans charts for weeks and laying the foundation for her first Afrikaans album, Mis Jou So.
The 1980s saw Field expand her reach, scoring a massive Top 20 hit with "Don’t Fly Too High," which peaked at number four. Her versatility allowed her to thrive across various media; she appeared on numerous television specials and recorded successful children’s albums with John Edmond.
