Jemma Gwynne Griffiths, the artist known simply as Jem, emerged from the coastal town of Penarth, Wales, to become one of the most distinctive voices in 21st-century electronic pop. Her journey to the top of the charts was far from traditional. While studying law at the University of Sussex, she immersed herself in the burgeoning breakbeat and DJ culture of Brighton, eventually co-founding an independent record label. This background in production gave her a unique edge, allowing her to blend organic singer-songwriter sensibilities with complex trip-hop and lounge influences.
Jem’s international career ignited when her demo reached the ears of influential DJs in California, leading to a surge in demand for her debut album, “Finally Woken.” The record’s lead single, "They," utilized a clever classical sample to create a hauntingly catchy pop anthem that dominated European airwaves. Her success was further solidified by her presence in film and television; songs like "It's Amazing" became synonymous with major soundtracks, including “the Sex and the City movie.”
After moving to Los Angeles, she continued to explore new sonic territories with her sophomore effort, Down to Earth, and later, the self-produced Beachwood Canyon.
