Jan-Mattys van Lill is a prominent South African Afrikaans singer-songwriter and entrepreneur who transitioned from a successful career in musical groups to becoming a standout solo artist. Originally from Johannesburg and currently based in Cape Town, he first gained widespread national recognition as a standout finalist in the third season of the popular music talent competition "Die Kontrak" in late 2023. His performances during the show, characterized by his charismatic stage presence and vocal range, quickly established him as a fan favorite in the Afrikaans music scene.
Before launching his solo breakthrough, Jan-Mattys built a solid foundation as a member of the Afrikaans pop groups Matt Martin and Tussen Sterre. His time with Tussen Sterre was particularly successful, as the group won a prestigious Ghoema Award in 2018 for their debut album, Kosmies. In addition to his life on stage, he is a dedicated music educator and businessman, having founded the JM Musiekakademie to mentor and train aspiring young artists in Gauteng.
In July 2024, he officially launched his solo journey by signing with Select Musiek, a division of Sony Music Entertainment Africa. His debut solo single, "Fluit Fluit," became an immediate hit upon its release on July 19, 2024. Its infectious whistle-based melody and upbeat rhythm define co-written with Emil Paul and Duncan Laubscher. The song’s inspiration came from his personal life and his relationship with his English-speaking fiancée.
As of early 2026, Jan-Mattys has solidified his position as a leading voice in modern Afrikaans pop. Following the success of "Fluit Fluit," he released several popular singles throughout 2025, including "Huis Toe Dra" and "Stof Skop." He remains a constant fixture on the South African festival circuit, performing at major events like the 2025 Afrikitifees and maintaining a busy touring schedule across the country.
