Journey
Jairus Ditshotlo Nkwe, widely recognised as Jakarumba, is part of the core generation that helped define kwaito’s rise in South Africa. Growing up in Soweto, he was surrounded by township culture where music, street expression, and daily life were closely connected. That environment shaped his role as a member of Trompies, one of kwaito’s most influential groups during its formative and peak years.
Within Trompies, he became known for his distinct voice and energetic stage presence, contributing to the group’s identity as they released music that reflected township experiences in a direct and accessible way.
Alongside his group work, he developed a solo catalogue. In 2002, he released “Problem Child,” a project rooted in township life and delivered largely in isiZulu. The album added a more personal perspective to his creative output outside the group setting.
He later returned with “Dance Floor Commander” in 2012, a 14-track project focused on nightlife, celebration, and social connection through music. The release reinforced his connection to dance-oriented production while still drawing from everyday lived experiences.
Across both group and solo work, his material remains grounded in familiar township storytelling, reflecting real-life themes in a straightforward way rather than abstract interpretation.
Beyond music, he has also explored business activities while staying connected to the cultural space that established his career.
His journey reflects sustained involvement in kwaito from its early rise through to later solo projects, maintaining relevance across different phases of the genre’s development.
