Lebogang Jonathan Mabunda, known as JD Monate, is a South African producer, DJ, and songwriter linked to Pretoria’s Bacardi house movement and the early formation period that later fed into amapiano. His work developed inside Tshwane’s township DJ circuits, where Sghubu sa Pitori defined a street-driven style built on heavy percussion, chant-led arrangements, and club-focused energy rooted in kasi spaces, taverns, and taxi culture.
He became active within Team Bacardi and Team Skorokoro alongside figures such as DJ Dadaman and Mapentane, contributing to a wave of releases that circulated widely through informal distribution networks before digital platforms took over. His production approach helped connect Bacardi house’s raw rhythmic structure with the slower, log-drum direction that became central to early amapiano.
His work moved through grassroots channels like CD compilations, DJ sets, and local street sessions, giving it strong visibility within Pretoria’s underground circuit. That positioning placed him within the network of producers shaping the city’s dance sound identity during the 2000s and 2010s transition period.
Collaborations include Dadaman, Mapentane, Pencil, Tsitso, Tumza D’Kota, Villa, Da Box, Nkuli, Abidoza, and Master Jay.
