Herc Cut The Lights, born Isaiah Nkhalo Zuza, is a Zimbabwean-born producer, songwriter, and artist based in South Africa. Widely respected for shaping contemporary hip-hop and Amapiano, he built his reputation behind the boards before stepping confidently into the spotlight as a recording artist.
His stage name traces back to childhood games where his brother called himself Zeus and he adopted Hercules. The full moniker was cemented during a studio session when someone shouted, “Herc, cut the lights!” The phrase stayed.
Raised on jazz, reggae, and African music during long drives with his father, Herc developed an early ear for sound. He is self-taught, learning production through experimentation, borrowed sound engineering books, and time spent in a neighbor’s home studio.
Beginning on SoundCloud in 2017, he quickly gained traction, collaborating with emerging talents like Willy Cardiac. His breakthrough years included major contributions to SOIL by Priddy Ugly and B4NOW by Blxckie, producing hits such as “Kwenzekile.” His catalog also includes work with DJ Maphorisa, Riky Rick, Sha Sha, Focalistic, Davido, and Wizkid. He earned two Producer of the Year nominations at the SA Hip Hop Awards.
In 2024, he debuted as a lead artist with “Tholakuwe,” featuring Sjava, Blxckie, and Young Stunna. His 2026 debut album, SSG’98, further established his artistic range across hip-hop, amapiano, and electronic music. Today, Herc continues expanding his footprint while mentoring emerging producers and exploring global collaborations.
