Headie One, born Irving Ampofo Adjei, is a British rapper and songwriter of Ghanaian descent from Tottenham, North London. He grew up on the Broadwater Farm estate, where tragedy and ambition shaped his early life, and an ankle injury curtailed his athletic aspirations before he turned fully to music.
Adjei's musical journey began in his teens under the name Headz, but it was after several legal setbacks and prison terms that he fully committed to his craft. His stage name, "Headie One," originated from a childhood nickname referencing the shape of his head, which friends likened to a 50p coin. He first rose to prominence as a key member of the OFB (Original Farm Boys) collective and through his 2018 solo mixtape, The One, which featured the underground hit "Know Better". That same year, the release of The One Two further established his "50p" flow and intricate storytelling as hallmarks of the UK drill genre.
The year 2020 marked a historic turning point when his debut studio album, "Edna," shot straight to number one on the UK Albums Chart. Dedicated to his late mother, the album showcased his ability to blend gritty realism with melodic sensibility, earning him the Breakthrough of the Year award at the GRM Daily Rated Awards.
Throughout his career, Headie One has bridged the gap between the streets and global stardom, collaborating with titans such as Drake on "Only You Freestyle" and Stormzy on "Ain't It Different". In 2023, he received the BRITs Billion Award for surpassing 1 billion career streams in the UK. His sophomore album, "The Last One" (2024), serves as a reflective conclusion to his "One" series, solidifying his status as a definitive voice in modern British music.
