H.E.R., born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and actress known for her soulful vocals, guitar-driven sound, and initially anonymous artistic identity. She rose to prominence in the late 2010s as one of contemporary R&B’s most influential voices, blending elements of soul, blues, and modern urban music into emotionally expressive songwriting.
Raised in Vallejo, California, she was exposed to music early through her family, especially her father’s involvement in a cover band. Performing from childhood, she appeared on major U.S. television programs as a young talent and later signed with RCA Records in her early teens. Before adopting her stage name, she released music under her real name, Gabi Wilson, building early industry experience while still very young.
In 2016, she reintroduced herself as H.E.R., an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed,” choosing anonymity so listeners would focus on her music rather than her identity.
