Kagiso Mooketsi Diseko, professionally known as Gwyza, is a legendary South African musician whose work was instrumental in the commercial and cultural explosion of Kwaito and local Hip-Hop. Rising from the streets of Soweto, Gwyza became a central figure in the TKZee Family, a collective that redefined the South African sound in the late 1990s. He gained nationwide fame for his gritty, deep-voiced delivery on the 1998 anthem "Shibobo," which celebrated Benni McCarthy and the national football team. His presence was equally vital on the landmark 1999 album "Guz 2001," where his performances on tracks like "Senerate" and "Mr. & Mrs. Fake" established him as a premier lyricist.
Transitioning to a solo artist, Gwyza released his debut album, "Made In SA," in 2003. The project, characterized by his signature baritone and themes of township identity, featured popular tracks such as "Sondela" and "Tsa Mapantsula." Beyond his solo output, Gwyza has remained a loyal collaborator to the Bala Brothers, particularly Zwai Bala, acting as a link between the street-level origins of Kwaito and the more formal vocal explorations of the B3 project. Now a respected veteran, his influence persists through his recent 2024 and 2025 releases, including "Vlak Plaas" and "Soul Survivor." Gwyza’s legacy is that of a cultural commentator who successfully translated the township experience into a permanent fixture of the national musical canon.
