Gilberto Santa Rosa Cortés, widely known as “El Caballero de la Salsa,” is a Puerto Rican singer and bandleader whose career has made him one of the most respected figures in salsa and tropical music. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, he developed an interest in music at an early age and studied at the Escuela Libre de Música de San Juan.
Santa Rosa began performing professionally during his teenage years and later joined Willie Rosario's orchestra in 1981. His time with the band helped establish him as a promising salsa vocalist before he embarked on a solo career in 1986. His music has moved comfortably between traditional salsa, romantic salsa, bolero, and other tropical styles.
Songs such as “Conciencia,” “Que Alguien Me Diga,” “Vivir Sin Ella,” “Déjate Querer,” and “Conteo Regresivo” became important parts of his repertoire. His albums include “Perspectiva,” “Esencia,” “Expresión,” “Auténtico,” and “Directo al Corazón.”
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Santa Rosa has collected Grammy and Latin Grammy honors and received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. He has also earned a Guinness World Records distinction for the most number-one albums on Billboard's Tropical Albums chart. His elegant commitment to salsa tradition have secured his place as one of Puerto Rico's most enduring Latin music artists.
