Phillip Botha, stage name Ghapi, is a South African Afrikaans rock musician, singer, songwriter, drummer, producer, and entrepreneur recognized for his energetic live performances and distinctive dual role as both lead vocalist and drummer. Active in the music industry since the early 1980s, Ghapi first developed his musical foundation through the family group Love Corporation before co-founding the band Georgia in 1989 alongside his brothers. Georgia became known across South Africa for its versatility, extensive touring schedule, and blend of rock-oriented Afrikaans music.
Ghapi launched his solo career in 2005 with the album "In die Diepkant In," introduced during the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK). The album established him as a prominent figure in Afrikaans rock, producing successful singles including “In die Diepkant In,” “Ek wil jou hê,” “Dis net jy,” and “Wie ek is.” Subsequent albums such as "Wie Ek Is…"(2008) and "Rock It!" (2009) reinforced his reputation for combining melodic rock arrangements with emotionally driven songwriting. Several of his songs achieved chart success on stations including OFM, Bay FM, and Kovsie FM.
Known for his powerful stage presence, large drum setup, and charismatic audience interaction, Ghapi built a loyal fanbase within the Afrikaans music community. His musical style incorporates classic rock, blues, contemporary Afrikaans pop-rock, and inspirational themes rooted in personal experiences and spirituality. While often associated with Christian influences, he has described himself primarily as a rock musician whose faith naturally informs his songwriting.
Beyond performing, Ghapi has worked extensively behind the scenes as a producer, studio owner, and music entrepreneur. He founded Rock Till You Drop Records and Rock Till You Drop Studios, enabling him to independently release and distribute much of his catalogue. He has also collaborated with artists including Dilana, Dewald Wasserfall, Pieter Koen, Adam Tas, Appel, and Juan Boucher. His involvement in live productions, recording projects, and mentorship initiatives reflects a long-standing contribution to South Africa’s rock and Afrikaans music industries.
