Mkhatshani Daniel Shirinda, affectionately crowned the "General," stands as the most influential figure in the history of Xitsonga music. Born in 1937 in the Limpopo province, Shirinda’s musical journey began with indigenous instruments like the xitende and mbira. However, his true innovation came in 1958 when he adopted the electric guitar, subsequently becoming the first Mutsonga artist to record commercially. He pioneered the transition of Shangaan music from village rituals to the professional recording studio, establishing a template for the high-tempo "Xigaza" dance style.
In the mid-1980s, Shirinda’s local fame caught the attention of American singer Paul Simon. This resulted in the historic Graceland collaboration, where Shirinda and his backing vocalists, The Gaza Sisters, recorded the track "I Know What I Know." This partnership took him on a global tour, showcasing Tsonga culture at venues like London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Central Park. His mastery of the guitar influenced a generation of African musicians, bridge-building between traditional folk and international pop.
Throughout his prolific career, Shirinda released legendary albums such as “Juliet,” (1980), “Nghena Shirinda,” (1981), and “Music Is The Food Of Love,” (1985). He remained deeply rooted in his community at Makhasa village, serving as a prominent traditional healer and spiritual guide. When he passed away in June 2017 at the age of 79, he left behind a massive family and a cultural legacy that continues to define the rhythmic soul of the Tsonga people.
