Gert Smit, better known as Gene Rockwell, grew up between Krugersdorp and Durban, where his interest in music quickly moved from casual performance into serious stage activity. A win at Durban’s “Little Top” talent competition during his teens brought him early attention and set the direction for his career. He soon formed The Blue Angels, later renamed The Falcons, a Durban-based band that became well known on the local dance circuit and helped establish his reputation as a rising performer.
His solo breakthrough arrived in 1965 with “Heart,” which reached No.1 on the LM Radio Top 20 and is reported to have sold over 2.5 million copies, making it one of the standout South African recordings of the period. He maintained momentum with a steady stream of chart entries including “Torture,” “Ciao,” and “Shame On Me,” building a consistent presence across the 1960s and 1970s.
Over time, his musical direction shifted from gritty blues-pop into country and folk influences, reflected in songs such as “Rosie,” “My Life’s In Good Hands (Jesus, Sweet Jesus),” and “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.” This evolution highlighted his adaptability and range across styles while remaining rooted in popular music.
Beyond his recordings, Rockwell’s career included recognition such as the Shure Gold Microphone Award in 1976, acknowledging his contribution to South African music. His chart record included multiple top entries over a long span, even without frequent No.1 placements beyond his major breakthrough.
He passed away in 1998 in Roodepoort after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a catalogue that continued to circulate among fans of 1960s and 1970s South African pop and rock.
