Eugene Ammons, popularly called Gene Ammons or Jug, was a prominent American jazz tenor saxophonist. His father, Albert Ammons, was a well-known boogie-woogie pianist.
Gene Ammons started playing the saxophone at a young age and eventually became one of the most prominent tenor saxophonists in the world of jazz.
In the 1950s, he began recording for Chess Records, a newly-formed label and his debut record, "My Foolish Heart," was released, which made it onto the black pop charts in Billboard Magazine.
He released his most famous album, "Boss Tenor," which solidified his reputation as a prominent jazz musician.
Though Ammons has since passed away August 6, 1974, his legacy as one of the greatest tenor saxophonists in the history of jazz lives on.
