Nkululeko Mthiyane is a South African hip-hop artist and songwriter from KwaZulu-Natal, known for his contributions to the Durban underground rap scene and his collaborative work in Afro-urban music. He built his career independently through mixtapes, streaming platforms, and features with emerging and established artists, gaining recognition for his raw lyrical storytelling and township-influenced sound.
He first became more visible with his 2016 debut release "Kwanuk’ Edubane," a 14-track hip-hop album that showcased his early style of conscious rap, street narratives, and multilingual delivery in English and isiZulu. The project includes standout tracks such as “My Love Letter to Hip-Hop,” “Bakhohlwa Kalula,” “Bafana Bami,” “Ngixolele,” “Phaka Joe,” “Everything,” “This Is War,” “Our Father,” “Another Story,” and “T.R.U.T.H.”
Beyond his debut album, Frdom has remained active in collaborations across South Africa’s evolving music landscape. One of his notable appearances is on the 2019 Afro-house hit “My Dali (Remix)” by TNS alongside Indlovukazi and Scelo, which further expanded his visibility beyond hip-hop into dance music audiences.
His sound blends trap-influenced hip-hop, Afro-urban rhythms, and conscious lyricism, often reflecting themes of struggle, identity, ambition, and personal growth. Working largely as an independent artist, Frdom represents the Durban wave of grassroots hip-hop musicians building careers outside major label systems while maintaining strong local influence.
